Larry Clark
received a lot of public notoriety for this film, both good and bad. The
movie is made to look like you are just eavesdropping on a bunch of
teenage kids. The banter-like dialogue and the party settings are as
natural as they could be. Sex and drugs and violence.
Please don’t think that I
regard all kids as being like this, but it is an unfortunate truth that
there are many more of them like this (or moving towards this) than we
would like to admit. I’ve seen group after group of young people
grow up being taught about various dangers in life, only to fly in the
face of caution and common sense when the opportunity arises. I suppose
kids have always been somewhat like that, but in our society of HIV,
designer drugs, raves and media influence, we’ve created obstacle
courses for kids that current adults never had to endure.
I know many teenagers who
have seen this movie who feel that it is 'right on' and even enjoyed
watching it strictly as a story relevant to their lives. Hey, it’s no
more than what we’ve said would happen for the past 30 years...
