Orson Scott Card:
http://www.hatrack.com/
Writer of all of the Ender and Ender's
Shadow books, this author writes about kids in extreme situations doing some
extreme things. It's exciting, fast paced and smooth to read. Check
out Ender's Shadow first, which is in the process of being made into a
movie. His new one, Magic Street, is pretty good as well.
This web site has a huge amount of stuff on it, including short stories and
sample chapters from his books.
Christopher Moore:
http://www.chrismoore.com/index.htm
My favorite part of this
web site is the list of suggested books to check out "while waiting for the
next Christopher Moore book". My two favorite Moore books would
easily be Lamb and Fluke, although there are lots of others.
Chris is a very funny guy, ...and he is not opposed to answering e-mails if you
send him a question or comment.
C. D. Payne: http://www.nicktwisp.com/
Youth in Revolt
is a very popular cult book for teenage boys. The antics of Nick Twisp, 14
year old aspiring writer, are a little off color, but hilarious. The book
has a very advanced vocabulary, but is definitely worth struggling with.
This web site has a lot of interviews, articles, comments about Payne's books,
and an interesting history of how hard it was to get Youth In Revolt
published.
Eoin Colfer: http://www.artemisfowl.com/
http://homepage.eircom.net/~eoincolfer65/home.htm?main=sitemap.htm
I was pleasantly
surprised at the Artemis Fowl series of books. I actually didn't expect
much, but found a well written and interesting story in the first book and was
not disappointed by the sequels. Artemis is one of the most endearing
criminal minds around! I think a movie is in the works.
Colfer's homepage is very slow to load if you don't have high Speed, and the
index page seems to be seriously flawed. The link above skips it and goes
right to the sitemap, although it seems to have some flaws as well. Colfer
needs a new web site designer. Some interesting stuff, though, including sample
chapters from books.
Garth Nix: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~garthnix/
The publisher
site is slick but doesn't contain a lot of info. The one above is the
author's own site, which is a work in progress, but at least has some
interesting stuff on it. Check out "My New Really Epic
Fantasy Series". Nix's Keys To The Kingdom series is the
one that I recommend (although I haven't read the others). It's typically
Arthurian, but has decent characters and a fast moving plot. Not really
radical, but still entertaining.
Robert Rankin: http://www.sproutlore.com/
A so-so
web site. But the sheer volume of Rankin's insane books is amazing.
I would recommend Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse as an
introduction to Rankin. Definitely radical! You will never be able
to read nursery rhymes the same way again. He has a very
"British" style, kind of like Douglas Adams.
Douglas Adams: http://www.douglasadams.com/
The late
Douglas Adams penned the masterpiece A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
It was probably one of the first novels to venture "way out there",
being both random and bizarre. I found that the books get a little less
exciting as you go through the series (there are 5), but the first two are
excellent.
